A fatal semi-truck accident occurred on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 on Florida's Turnpike near University Drive. The incident involved a silver Ford Escape SUV, whose back half was completely smashed in as seen by Sky 10, a news helicopter. The SUV was stopped in the center lane just west of mile marker 46 in Miramar for an unknown reason, when it was struck by a semi-truck causing it to be re-directed in a southwesterly direction and striking the concrete median wall along the inside paved shoulder. The SUV eventually came to a halt on the inside paved shoulder.

The semi-truck was found with front-end damage near the scene. The driver of the SUV, who was 26 years old, had exited his vehicle before the crash and was not injured. However, the passenger of the SUV, a 20-year-old man, was still sitting in the front passenger seat and was hit by the semi-truck. He was transported to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital by Miramar Fire Rescue, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The 38-year-old driver of the semi-truck was unharmed in the crash, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

What to Do After a Semi-Truck Accident in Florida

If you've been involved in a semi-truck accident in Florida, it's important to take the following steps:

  • Prioritize Safety: Move your vehicle to a safe location away from traffic, turn on your hazard lights, and set up emergency triangles or flares if you have them. Check for injuries and call 911 immediately if someone is hurt.
  • Exchange Information: Get the contact and insurance information of the other driver involved in the accident, including names, phone numbers, addresses, license plate numbers, and insurance details. If there were witnesses to the accident, get their contact information as well.
  • Document the Scene: Take photos or videos of the scene, including vehicle damage, skid marks, and any other relevant details. This evidence can be crucial for insurance claims or legal proceedings.
  • File a Police Report: Contact the police and file a report. This report will be helpful when dealing with insurance companies or in case legal action is necessary.
  • Seek Medical Attention: Even if you feel fine, it's important to get checked out by a doctor. Some injuries, like whiplash or concussions, may not show symptoms right away.
  • Contact an Attorney: If you've been injured in the accident or have significant vehicle damage, it's wise to contact an attorney who handles semi-truck accidents in Florida. They can help you navigate the legal process and ensure you receive fair compensation.

Remember, it's important to act quickly after a semi-truck accident in Florida. Following these steps can help protect your safety and rights.
