According to sources, a 66-year-old man from St. Augustine died as a result of a collision with a school bus near Panama City on Tuesday, January 17, 2023. The accident happened sometime around 4:30 p.m. near US Highway 231 and Penny Road.

At the time of the collision, the decedent was driving a pickup truck south on US 231 toward Penny Road, and the school bus was stopped in the road. The decedent apparently crashed into the back of the school bus and tragically died later at a local hospital. Thankfully, there were no children on the school bus at the time of the accident.

Drivers Must be Extra Careful Around a School Bus and Children

There is nothing more tragic than harm to a child, and our laws regarding school bus safety reflect that sentiment. Drivers who are in areas around children going to school or getting out of school are held to higher standards, as well as drivers around school buses. Below are some of the extra precautions we drivers must take when driving around children and school buses:

  • Always stop for a school bus. Do not pass when the flashing stop sign is out.
  • Do not use cell phones in any designated school crossing or school zone.
  • Be alert and watch for children when near schools, bus stops, school buses, or school parking lots.
  • Lower speed in accordance with school zone speed limits.
  • Watch and obey school crossing guards on roads near schools.
  • Stop for school bus when bus has on red lights and flashing STOP arms extended.

Drivers who do not follow these rules and hurt a child as a result can expect to pay serious fines. Moreover, they’re much more likely to be held liable for any injuries caused as a result of a school bus accident or an accident involving children.
