A tragic incident unfolded on the night of Friday, September 23, 2024 outside a beachfront extended-stay hotel in Boca Raton, Florida, resulting in the deaths of Christopher Liszak, 49, and Chandler Dill, 32, both from Oakland Park. The altercation began with an argument between Dill and the alleged shooter, De'Vante Moss, a Boynton Beach resident.
According to information available, Dill had rented a room at the hotel and was there with Moss before the fatal confrontation. The situation escalated in the parking lot. As others attempted to intervene, including Liszak, Moss reportedly retrieved a weapon from his vehicle and opened fire, killing both Dill and Liszak at close range.
A third man, described as a witness, was also shot but survived. Moss was apprehended in Laurens County, Georgia, less than 24 hours after the incident.
What Are Common Types of Negligent Security Incidents?
Negligent security cases often arise from violent crimes that occur on commercial properties. Some common incidents include:
- Shootings
- Stabbings
- Sexual assaults
- Physical assaults and robberies
- Kidnappings
These events can happen anywhere, but certain locations may be more susceptible to violent crime due to inadequate security measures.
Where Do Negligent Security Incidents Typically Occur?
Inadequate security can lead to violent attacks at business properties. Some of the more common properties where these incidents occur are:
- Hotels and motels 🛎️
- Apartment complexes 🏘️
- Shopping malls and retail stores 🛍️
- Parking lots and garages 🅿️
- Nightclubs and bars 🍸
- Gas stations and Convenience Stores ⛽
Ultimately, property owners have a responsibility to provide reasonable security measures to protect guests, residents, and visitors from foreseeable harm. What's "reasonable" will depend on the area and the history of crime on the property. The obvious result of not responding to crime on a business property is that crime will increase, making it much more likely that a patron or guest will be attacked.
What Security Issues Can Lead to Negligent Security Claims at Hotels?
Several factors can contribute to a negligent security claim at a hotel:
- Inadequate lighting in common areas and parking lots 💡
- Lack of functioning security cameras 📹
- Insufficient or untrained security personnel 💂
- Broken locks, gates, or access control systems 🔒
- Failure to conduct background checks on employees 📋
The question in these types of cases is whether the property had appropriate security measures in place to prevent or respond to foreseeable violent incidents.
